Innovation in Beauty : Nose Bioplasty

The fear of plastic surgery prevents many people from considering the idea of a nose job.The alternative to going under the knife is the "nose bioplasty" or "Rhinoplasty " without surgery, in which a specialist cosmetic implants is injected to mold the nose.

The bioplastic is a non surgical procedure that involves injecting a filler as an implant which are FDA approve.Once injected, the implant is dispersed in the tissue(fat, muscles, skin, etc.) gving more volume and projection to the site. Therefore, the bioplastic can be used to enhance, design and change the shape of many body parts.

Nasal Bioplasty (nose held) is commonly performed to enhance the projection of the nose or perk.It is a simple procedure that can be done in an outpatient clinic under local anesthesia. The implant is injected through through a micro canula or needle and the result can be seen immediately, the patient can even decide if they need to add more volume.

The doctor first applies a anesthetic cream then the local anesthesia injection and within a few minutes, the procedure can be started. These products are injected into a very precise locations such as the top of the nose, fill small gaps, smooth the angles or change the angle of the tip of the nose. This technique can be  use to restore the symmetry of the nose but it cannot reduce the size of a big nose.

The following important points that the patient should know are :

  • The procedure can be performed in an outpatient clinic which takes only a few minutes under local anesthesia.
  • There are different types of substance that are available in the market whose effects can last from 6 months to 2 years.Ask your doctor for advise.
  • The patient is recommended to return at least every year to perform some tweaks.
  • The procedure is not recommended to person under the age of 17.
  • Non surgical rhinoplasty is not a good option in all cases.Patients whio must make major changes like bone restructuring of the nose have to resort to the traditional surgical rhinoplasty.
  • The patient will be advise to take antibiotic and apply a tape (which simulatesa splint)until the graft is well fixed in the nose.
  • The patient should avoid sports or tasks thatt demand much effort for a week.

To sum it up ,the non surgical rhinoplasty is a good option for patients who want to tweak their nose without going under the knife. The results is immediate,no major side effects. The usual side effects that the patient may present are the change in color of the skin covering the nose, tightening of some areas and deformities or granuloma.

It is imperative that the physician is well experience which can do the procedure sparingly and carefully to avoid having an excess.

Chickenpox in Dubai

Currently a high number of chickenpox infections are reported in different schools and nurseries of Dubai.

Chickenpox (German: Windpocken) is caused by the Varicella-Zoster-Virus that spreads from person to person by direct contact or by air from an infected person's coughing or sneezing. The highly contagious nature of VZV explains the epidemics of chickenpox that spread through schools as one child who is infected quickly spreads the virus to many classmates. Varicella has an infection rate of 90% in close contacts. Most people become infected before adulthood but 10% of young adults remain susceptible. Varicella starts usually with mild fever followed by a rash. A clear vesicle (dew drop) develops on top of the area of redness. This is very characteristic for chickenpox. After about 8 to 12 hours the fluid in the vesicle becomes cloudy and the vesicle breaks leaving a crust. The fluid is highly contagious, but once the lesion crusts over, it is not considered contagious. The crust usually falls off after seven days sometimes leaving a crater-like scar. Another hallmark of chickenpox is that new lesions crop up every day for several days. It may be a week before new lesions stop appearing and existing lesions crust over. Typically the lesions are all over the body, also hair, mouth and genital areas are affected. Children should not be sent back to school until all lesions have crusted over.

Following primary infection there is usually lifelong protective immunity from further episodes of chickenpox. Complications are Pneumonia, Otitis media, Cerebellitis, Encephalitis and bacterial superinfection of the lesions. The most common late complication of chicken pox is shingles, caused by reactivation of the VZV decades after the initial episode of chickenpox.
A person with chickenpox is infectious from 1 to 5 days before the rash appears. The contagious period continues until all blisters have formed scabs, which may take 5 to 10 days. It takes from 10 to 21 days after contact with an infected person for someone to develop chickenpox.

Chickenpox infection is milder in young children, and symptomatic treatment is sufficient. Use of antiviral drugs is currently not recommended. Infection in otherwise healthy adults tends to be more severe and active.

If exposure to varicella in certain 'at risk' populations is confirmed (immunosuppressed individuals, pregnant seronegative women, neonates), anti-varicella zoster immunoglobulin may be given prior to onset of disease symptoms. Varicella infection in pregnant women occuring during the 8th – 21th week of gestation can lead to a severe congenital varicella syndrome. Infection late in gestation or following birth is referred to as neonatal varicella. The risk of the baby is greatest following exposure to infection in the period 7 days prior to delivery and up to 3 days following the birth and has to be treated and monitored in the hospital. Women who are immune to chickenpox cannot become infected and do not need to be concerned about it for themselves or their infant during pregnancy.

Every child should receive a vaccine against Varicella after 12 months of age. The new recommendations are to give 2 dosages (a second 8 weeks after the first one). Many children who were vaccinated between 2004 and 2007 have one vaccine only (according to the standard at that time) and should now get a booster in order to be fully immunized.

The Influenza Vaccine

This year the influenza vaccine is generally recommended but especially for pregnant women (preferably from 2nd trimester on) as they show a higher risk to develop complications. It is also highly recommended for people over 60, the chronically ill (Asthma etc) and the people caring for them, people having close contact to under 6 months old babies as well as healthcare personnel. The vaccine can be given from 6 months on.
The actual influenza vaccine provides protection against 2 strains of Influenza A (H1N12 (“swine flu”) and H3N2) and Influenza B. A special vaccine against swine flu is therefore not anymore necessary and not recommended. As the protection starts 2 weeks after giving the vaccine it is best to give the vaccine as early as possible. In our clinic it is already available!
